LOS ANGELES, April 15 (UPI) -- Service workers were supported by several students in their one-day strike against University of California's 12 campuses to protest stagnant wages.
The Thursday protest by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees also was directed at what the workers claimed to be the university's unfair spending practices, the San Jose Mercury New reported.
"These people are janitors, food services; these are the people that really matter," said Amanda Breen, a sociology student at the University of California-Santa Cruz. "The regents are jerking them around. It's not fair."
In Berkeley, hundreds of students joined the strikers, carrying signs that read: "Strike for Justice at UC" and "Students Support Service Workers."
"Seems like the university has money for everything else, but not for us," said UCSC shuttle-bus driver Sandra Cohen, adding the university's governing board had created a $190,000-a-year position for the partner of new UCSC chancellor.
