Energy secretary urges natgas alternatives

WASHINGTON, April 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Broadman said Friday natural gas is such a useful substance, it is virtually a waste to use it for the generation of electricity.

Speaking to the U.S. Energy Association in Washington, Broadman said electricity can be made with other fuels less valuable than gas.

Producing power with gas, he added, was "like using good Scotch to wash the dishes."

Broadman said rising demand for natural gas would keep prices high and strain domestic gas supplies, making it more important than ever to develop clean-coal, nuclear power and liquefied natural gas sources.
