Damish queen disses radical Islam

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, April 14 (UPI) -- Denmark's queen nags Muslim immigrants to learn Danish and says the country must take a stand against radical Islam in a new authorized biography.

Annelise Bistrup, author of "Margrethe," quotes the queen as saying that she disapproves of "these people for whom religion is their entire life," the BBC reports.

Queen Margrethe is the supreme governor of the established Lutheran Church in Denmark. While 85 percent of the 5.4 million Danes are at least nominal Lutherans, Muslims, with about 150,000 in the country, are the second largest religious group.

"We have to run the risk of being labelled in an unflattering way, because there are some things for which we should display no tolerance," the queen said.

Denmark has a longstanding reputation for tolerance. During World War II, the Danes, led by Margrethe's father, King Christian, banded together to save thousands of Jews, both native-born and refugees.

In recent years, with an immigrant population of 400,000, the country has become somewhat less tolerant. Recent legislation makes becoming a permanent resident more difficult, and the Supreme Court recently ruled that a supermarket had the right to fire an employee who wore an Islamic headscarf to work.
