WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- Italy's deputy premier Tuesday praised cooperation with Washington in the inquiry into the killing of an Italian agent by U.S. troops in Iraq.
"I must say that I'm very happy with the type of cooperation which has been established," Gianfranco Fini said after a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The Italian agent, Nicola Calipari, was killed by U.S. troops March 14 after his government had arranged the release of kidnapped Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena. Their car was heading toward Baghdad airport and at the time U.S. officials said it failed to respond to warnings to stop. The incident strained relations between Rome and Washington.
Both sides agreed Wednesday the investigation into the killing would take more than the three to four weeks U.S. officials had initially estimated.
"The most important thing is not that this be done fast but that it be done right," Rice said.
