Indonesian volcano alert heightened

JAKARTA, April 13 (UPI) -- Indonesian officials heightened the volcano alert level for Sumatra and Java islands Wednesday as rumbling and steaming continued in two mountains.

Some 26,000 people were evacuated on Sumatra Tuesday when Mount Talang spewed 15 inches of hot rock and ash on neighboring villages. The other mountain of concern is Mount Tangkuban Perahu, about 900 miles south, which has not erupted, but is increasingly active, Voice of America reported.

Geologists have linked the activity with massive earthquakes that hit the region in December and again last month.

There are more than 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits astride the intersection of three of the continent-sized tectonic plates that form the earth's crust.

There also are concerns if Mount Tangkuban Perahu does erupt, it could upset the Asia-Africa summit later this month. The leaders of more than 50 nations are scheduled to meet in nearby Bandung.
