Mom allegedly allowed child to smoke pot

ANGLETON, Texas, April 11 (UPI) -- A Texas mother of three has been charged with allowing her 5-year-old daughter to smoke marijuana.

Amanda Suzanne Williams was charged Friday at Angleton with endangering a child and later released on a $7,500 bond, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday. If convicted, she could face up to two years in a state jail and a fine of $10,000.

"The accusation is that she was negligent in smoking marijuana where the child could get access to it," said police Detective David Steves. "A witness said the mother handed the joint to the child and allowed her to do it. The mother said that wasn't true. There are conflicting statements, but it is still the same offense."

The alleged incident occurred in December at Williams' home and Child Protective Service workers reported it to Angleton police in late March after hearing about it from someone in the community, Steves said.

The girl and Williams' two other children, ages 1 and 2, are staying with relatives, a CPS spokeswoman said.
