Israel arrests Hamas leader

April 10, 2005 at 10:33 AM

GAZA, April 10 (UPI) -- Palestinian sources said the Israeli army Sunday arrested a Hamas leader on his way back to Gaza from Jerusalem.

They said Sheikh Hassan Yousef was detained after taking part in a huge gathering of Muslims at al-Aqsa Mosque, where thousands flocked to prevent Jewish extremists from raiding Islam's third holiest shrine.

Eyewitnesses said they saw Israeli army troops arresting Yousef in the center of the West Bank town of Ramallah after he left Jerusalem's al-Aqsa, where he delivered a fiery speech calling on Muslims to defend the mosque from attack.
