Taiwan stage collapse injures 160

TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 9 (UPI) -- A wooden stage collapsed Saturday at a Buddhist temple in Taiwan, injuring more than 160 pilgrims, rescue officials said.

The pilgrims had erected the 99-foot-high stage to take a picture at the Lingyen Mountain Temple near the town of Puli, the official Chinese government news agency Xinhua reported Saturday.

The cause of the collapse was being investigated, but officials said the stand was probably too weak to support the weight of the pilgrims.

The injured, including 18 with serious injuries, were taken to two nearby hospitals. However, rescue workers said none of the injured were in danger of dying.
