AMMAN, Jordan, April 9 (UPI) -- Jordan's religious authority Saturday warned against extremist Jews attacking al-Aqsa Mosque in east Jerusalem.
Jordanian Islamic Affairs Minister Abdul Salam Abbadi told United Press International his government "warns against any act that will threaten the sanctity of the Haram al-Sharif (al-Aqsa)."
His warning came after extremist Jewish groups that oppose an Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip threatened to storm al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third holiest shrine, Sunday.
East Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy shrines have been under Jordan's supervision since Israel captured the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, from Jordanian control in the 1967 Middle East war.
The 1994 Jordan-Israel peace treaty recognized Jordan's guardianship role of the shrines in Jerusalem.
Abbadi said his government "condemns all measures that disparage and harm Islamic sites in Jerusalem," adding that Jordan "does not debate the details" of promised Israeli measures to seal off al-Aqsa to Jews on Sunday.
