Report: Caution urged for stun gun use

WASHINGTON, April 4 (UPI) -- A new study indicates law enforcement officers should use stun guns with caution, the International Association of Chiefs of Police said Monday.

The report, "Electro-Muscular Disruption Technology: A Nine Step Strategy For Effective Deployment," is designed to help law enforcement safely deploy stun guns as a less-lethal force option for officers, the group said.

The report offers suggestions on developing policies and procedures associated with stun gun use, such as creating medical protocol options following an incident with a stun gun, developing comprehensive training programs for officers equipped with stun guns, and implementing departmental reporting systems to track stun gun-related incidents.

The report is an initial analysis of stun guns, focusing not on the technology, but, rather, on the management of that technology, the group said.

The report is accessible at iacp.org/research/rcdcuttingedgetech.htm.
