WASHINGTON, March 31 (UPI) -- Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., Wednesday removed himself from the list of potential challengers to GOP Sen. Lincoln Chaffee, a top Democratic target in 2006.
Citing his position on the House Appropriations Committee, Kennedy said in a statement that although he is grateful for the encouragement to run, he can make a greater difference in the lives of his constituents from his current post
Kennedy had previously indicated he would not run and threw his support behind Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I. Langevin's decision not to run for the Democratic nomination reinvigorated speculation that Kennedy might run.
Democratic recruiting attention is likely to turn to former state Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse. Secretary of State Matt Brown is the only current Democratic candidate.
