The Communist Party leader and was reportedly proposed as a candidate for the next presidential elections by 34 out of 56 deputies from the Communist parliamentary faction.

The members of the Communist faction that did not agree to propose Voronin may submit an alternative candidate, the president's representative Maria Postoico told reporters. That was done for "tactical reasons, in order not to disrupt the elections," scheduled for April 4, she told Interfax.
