CINCINNATI, March 28 (UPI) -- Federal agents are investigating how an object that looked like a gun got through the security checkpoint at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
The Transportation Safety Administration is looking into the incident, in which baggage screeners saw what looked like a gun in an X-ray of a carry-on bag, but not until the passenger and the bag had disappeared into a terminal, the Cincinnati Post said Monday.
"The bag was released to the passenger before TSA could further investigate," said spokesman Christopher White.
The incident Sunday morning led airport security officials to close the checkpoint and clear the terminal for 40 minutes. The closure delayed several flights and affected thousands of passengers. Flights returned to normal by 11 a.m. EST, an airport spokesman said.
Terminal 3, where the incident occurred, handles flights for Delta, Comair, Northwest and Continental.
The passenger whose bag contained the suspicious item was never located.
