Prince Rainier is stabilized, doctors say

MONTE CARLO, Monaco, March 27 (UPI) -- Prince Rainier of Monaco, who suffers from lung, cardiac and kidney problems and has been on a respirator, has stabilized, his physicians said Sunday.

"The state of health of (Prince Rainier) remains worrying," said a statement issued by the palace Sunday. The statement said the prince's prognosis was "very reserved," the BBC reported.

Rainier's children celebrated a private mass in the palace chapel Sunday, while citizens prayed in services for the monarch, who has suffered heart and respiratory problems for 10 years.

Pope John Paul II reportedly prayed for the prince and sent a written blessing offering "warm wishes" Saturday.

The prince entered the hospital March 7, appeared to be getting better, but then took a turn for the worse last week.
