University protects Islamic professor

RICHMOND, Va., March 25 (UPI) -- Virginia Commonwealth University officials are trying to determine how to protect a professor who led an Islamic prayer service attended by both men and women.

Amina Wadud's action has made her known around the world and angered many traditional Muslims. But Pamela Lepley, director of university information services, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that students have made few comments on it.

Lepley said that the meetings like the one this week are routine when VCU or one of its faculty becomes involved in a high-profile matter.

About 80 people were at the March 18 service in New York, half of them men. Traditionally in Islam, men and women do not pray together, and women are not supposed to lead prayers for men.

Wadud teaches Islamic studies at VCU.

The day after the service several VCU students and faculty members were injured when a suicide bomber attacked a theater in Qatar, near the university's College of Design Arts.
