Rival students clash over Syria pullout

BEIRUT, Lebanon, March 23 (UPI) -- Rival students clashed with knives and sticks at a Beirut university Wednesday leading to the suspension of studies and eviction of several of them.

A security source said rival students in Beirut's Arab University, divided over support to Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon, had an argument that developed into a fist fight and clashes with knives and sticks.

Two students were injured in the clash which came to an end after the intervention of security forces who disengaged the rivals.

Political tensions have been increasing since the Feb. 14 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, which was blamed by the multi-sectarian Lebanese opposition on Syria and its puppet regime in Lebanon.

Syria began earlier this month pulling out its forces and intelligence agencies from Lebanon in line with controversial Security Council resolution 1559.
