Chile: Ex-cult leader faces more charges

SANTIAGO, Chile, March 21 (UPI) -- Former cult leader Paul Schaefer was charged Monday with the disappearance of an enemy of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Schaefer is accused of orchestrating the supposed death of photographer and leftist Juan Maino in 1976.

Last week, Argentina shipped Schaefer -- a wanted child molester and cult leader -- back to Chile where he faces numerous charges.

The 83-year-old ex-Nazi is wanted in Chile on charges he molested more than two dozen children while living in the cloistered community, Colonia Dignidad.

Schaefer reportedly joined the isolated Chilean community in 1961 and became its leader. According to some former residents, sexual abuse and torture of political prisoners during Chile's military dictatorship (1973-91) were regular practices at Colonia Dignidad.
