Bolivia: President says he'll stay

LA PAZ, Bolivia, March 18 (UPI) -- Bolivian President Carlos Mesa has decided to stay in office after threatening to resign earlier this month, La Razon newspaper reports.

Mesa made his decision just a few hours after Congress rejected his proposal to hold elections in August, two years ahead of schedule.

The Bolivian leader said he was set to give up his office amid ongoing protests by opposition groups condemning his economic policies.

For weeks the poor South American nation has been plagued with roadblocks and protests by thousands of Mesa detractors calling for him to raise taxes on foreign energy firms.
