Meds may have led to fatal Vegas crash

LAS VEGAS, March 16 (UPI) -- A woman who killed four people when she crashed into a Las Vegas bus stop this week might have been suffering from a drug reaction and was not drunk.

Metro police announced late Tuesday they had still not sought charges against Veronica Schmidt in the deaths of four people because she was under a doctor's care and was taking new medication that could have caused her to lose control of her sport utility vehicle.

Schmidt's SUV plowed into a bus stop Monday morning, killing four Cimarron-Memorial High School students who were on their way to school.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal said Schmidt at first appeared to be under the influence of alcohol; however, police will have to wait another six weeks for results of a blood test to rule out an adverse reaction to an unspecified prescribed medication.

The newspaper said the school canceled its weekly gathering in the gym where students cheer on fellow student Mikala Gordon as she competes in television's "American Idol" program.
