Rafsanjani might run for president

TEHRAN, March 14 (UPI) -- Former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani said he would seek the presidency again if no qualified candidates come forward.

"As we are getting closer to the elections, I feel my responsibility is getting heavier," Rafsanjani said.

"If no competent and capable candidate comes forward I will definitely run for elections," Rafsanjani said, the Iranian News Agency, IRNA, reported Monday.

Rafsanjani, 70, president for two terms from 1989-97 and currently chairman of the powerful Expediency Council, accused the United States of seeking to deprive Iran from peaceful nuclear technology.

"The U.S. might be able to raise the issue of Iran's nuclear program before the Security Council but the road will be very long," he said.
