Schnaue began work for UPI as a copy boy at the age of 17 and worked his way up to become a financial writer. In 1994 he was named New York financial editor, overseeing the financial writers and tabulators in New York City.

In 2003 UPI closed its financial office in New York City, consolidating operations in Washington, but Schnaue continued to write copy for the UPI financial report as a contractor.

"He loved the job, he loved the people, he loved the company," said his wife, Barbara.

Schnaue was a member of the New York Financial Writers Association, and served on the board of the directors of Friends of Children Everywhere, New Beginnings Family Services and the Adoptive Parents Committee of Long Island.

"Frank was a consummate wire writer, being able to seemingly bang out bright and readable copy with one hand tied behind his back," said UPI Financial Editor T.K. Maloy.
