SHANGHAI, March 12 (UPI) -- Shanghai Pudong airport's second runway has been given the green light for operation, said an official with the airport.
The new runway -- 12,540 feet long and 198 feet wide -- was built to accommodate the Airbus A380 superjumbo, the world's largest commercial jet, reported Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency Saturday.
A sophisticated blind landing system has been incorporated in the runway to help planes land even in heavy fog.
Opened in 1999, Pudong's present runway has been operating at capacity, handling some 500 flights per day carrying more than 35 million passengers last year.
