Honduran groups protest CAFTA signing

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, March 8 (UPI) -- Honduran social justice organizations Tuesday blocked roads on various highways in protest of free trade, according to Radio Free America.

Indigenous and campesino groups stopped traffic on two highways, one in the north and one in the southern part of the country, a protest leader said.

According to Radio Free America, the groups were protesting the Honduran Congress's recent signing of the Central American Free Trade Agreement with the United States.

"This is in response to the situation of the Congressmen that (in approving the free trade agreement) have delivered our national sovereignty," Salvador Zuniga, coordinator of the Civil Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras, said.

Zuniga said the ratification of the agreement is "a truly detestable action on the part of the National Congress" that represents "the death of national agriculture and the violation of human rights."

Honduran Security Minister Óscar Alvarez said he would look for a way to negotiate with protesters, but those who break the law by blocking public roads will be prosecuted.
