Polish PM to force early elections

WARSAW, Poland, March 4 (UPI) -- Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka has threatened to resign in May to force early elections, Polish Television reported Friday.

Belka is locked in a fierce battle with members of his own Democratic Left Alliance. The party wants to postpone elections until October to give it a chance to recover in the opinion polls.

But Belka, who has hinted he intends to leave the Democratic Left Alliance and join a new centrist grouping, now says if the Social Democrats will not agree to elections in June he will force the issue by resigning in May.

President Aleksander Kwasniewski also says he favors June elections.

The popularity of the Democratic Left Alliance has languished in single digits for months and opinion polls suggest right wing parties would score a convincing victory if elections were held in the near future.
