U.S. delays drugs report; cites Rice travel

WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department Tuesday said a report on drug trafficking has been delayed because of Secretary of State's Condoleezza Rice's foreign travel.

The congressionally mandated International Narcotics Control Strategy Report was due to be released Tuesday.

"The secretary has been traveling a lot lately ... This is a report that she feels very strongly about," deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said. "It's very important. She wants to be able to have the opportunity to review it as thoroughly as possible before ... unveiling it publicly."

Rice was in London Tuesday for a conference on the Palestinian Authority. She has been abroad for almost half of the past month.

The State Department unveiled its annual human rights report Monday, also mandated by Congress. Rice was en route to London at the time.

Ereli said the reason the two reports were being treated differently was because the narcotics report "is a lot more technical." He denied there were any "bombshells" in the report.

The department did not specify when the report would be released.
