Two Algeria gunmen are killed

ALGIERS, Algeria, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Algerian army troops reportedly killed two Muslim fundamentalist gunmen Saturday and destroyed hideouts of armed Islamic groups in eastern Algeria.

The French-language daily Liberte quoted a security source as saying the army was conducting a search operation for several days in the province of Boumedras, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) east of Algiers, during which the incident occurred.

The dead gunmen belonged to the Salafi Group for Daawa and Fighting, Algeria's most dangerous Islamic organization that is dedicated to ousting the regime and replacing it with Islamic rule.

The authorities estimate the number of Salafi members still active militarily between 300 and 500.
