S. Korea to cement U.S. alliance

SEOUL, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- On the second anniversary of his inauguration, South Korea's President Roh Moo-hyun said cementing his government's U.S. alliance was a top priority.

"The alliance between South Korea and the United States is more solid than ever and the government will manage it properly in the future," Roh said during a Friday speech at the National Assembly. "The alliance will become stable in a more balanced way in 10 years."

Roh's speech was consistent with statements he made in Los Angeles in November when he indicated the Seoul government would "say what it needs to say" with the United States, even it is causes friction, reported the Korea Times Saturday.

South Korea is moving toward taking the lead in security issues, including the impasse over North Korea's nuclear weapons program.
