First IVF camel born in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The first camel conceived by in-vitro fertilization has been born in Abu Dhabi following four years of medical research into improving the breed.

UAE daily al-Ittihad said Saturday 14 other pregnancies by IVF have been conducted and four deliveries are expected in early March in a specialized center.

Experts said the technique is expected to benefit farmers.

Specialist Hajj Khaithar said eggs were retrieved from slaughtered female camels and fertilized at the laboratory for nine days before being placed in the womb of a female camel that had been treated with hormones.
