Queen denies snubbing Charles' wedding

LONDON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- British media was awash Wednesday with allegations and denials Queen Elizabeth was snubbing Prince Charles by staying away from his April wedding.

The announcement late Tuesday that the queen would skip the civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall in London between Charles and Camilla Bowles-Parker became the latest wedding sensation, and Buckingham Palace was swamped with media calls about a royal snub.

"The queen is attending the service of dedication and paying for the reception -- this is not a snub," a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman told The Guardian.

The palace declined to comment on speculation police had warned the queen against attending because of security reasons.

"(The queen's) prime concern is that the civil ceremony should be as low key as possible, in line with the couple's wishes," the spokeswoman said. "Clearly if the queen were to attend, the occasion would no longer be, by definition, low key."

The couple, both divorced, announced their engagement Feb. 10.
