Mubarak cautions Syria over Lebanon

CAIRO, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Wednesday cautioned Syria it cannot resist international pressure to pull out its troops out of Lebanon.

Speaking to reporters in Cairo, Mubarak said he dispatched a special envoy to Syrian President Hafez Assad "to brief him on the existing situation and think about possible solutions.

"The situation at present is difficult and Assad will not be able to confront the pressure of the whole international community," Mubarak said.

A government spokesman said intelligence chief Omar Suleiman was rushed to Damascus Wednesday with a message to Assad from Mubarak.

The Egyptian president also urged the Lebanese opposition, which is pressing for Syria's pull out from Lebanon, to agree on a suitable method for negotiating with Damascus.

"All the Lebanese, the opposition and the rest, need to sit together, talk and agree before negotiating with Syria in a suitable and proper manner," Mubarak said.

Cairo-based diplomats said Suleiman carried warnings to Syria that it should deal seriously with U.S. and European requests for Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon and a neutral investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
