WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, ended speculation about his political future by announcing he will run for re-election in 2006, Roll Call said Tuesday.
The 80-year-old lawmaker, appointed to the Senate in 1990, is the newest veteran Democrat to announce for re-election, much to the delight of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
"My career in public service has always been fueled by the hopes and dreams of our citizens," Akaka said in a statement. "Much remains to be done. Our brave men and women in the service still need adequate resources to enable them to complete their missions, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan."
"Next year," he continued, "I will humbly ask the people of Hawaii for another opportunity to continue to represent their interests in Washington, D.C."
Akaka, who also served 14 years in the House, is not expected to face major opposition.
