The landslide happened at about 3:00 a.m. when local residents were asleep, officials said.

By late Monday afternoon, 20 people were confirmed dead, while 40 others were injured.

Authorities have deployed about 1,000 rescue workers including soldiers and police officers to the stricken area.

Heavy rains in the Greater Bandung area also caused flooding in the West Java capital, leaving thousands of residents homeless.
