UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressed concern Friday over Myanmar's exclusion of political parties from its national convention.
The National League for Democracy -- the party of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi -- and other democratic parties were barred Thursday from attending the national convention to draft principles as a basis for a new constitution of Myanmar, as part of a process of national reconciliation.
The secretary-general appealed to Myanmar to resume a dialogue with other ethnic groups and political leaders, as he warned the results of the convention might not be recognized by the international community if certain parties were excluded.
Annan said the convention did not adhere to successive resolutions calling for democracy in Myanmar, the former Burma, made by the U.N. General Assembly.
Annan also called for the lifting of political restrictions in Myanmar, and the release of political prisoners, including elected officials.
