1 dead, 9 missing as bus falls off ferry

PORT BLAIR, India, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- One person died and nine others are missing and presumed dead after a bus slipped off a ferry in India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The bus was driving off a ferry at Baratang, about 30 miles from the capital, Port Blair, when a powerful wave struck the island Thursday at about 12:30 p.m. With the movement of the ferry, the bus was jolted into the sea.

Eight of the people on the bus were standing on the ferry before the wave struck and were able to swim to shore. The bus, with 11 people still in it, immediately sank in 20-foot deep water.

The driver managed to save himself by escaping from his cabin, police said. Naval divers found the body of a child and are searching for the remaining nine people, the BBC reported.

The islands were badly hit by Asia's tsunami, with about 1,400 confirmed dead and another 5,700 missing.
