Mob charges dropped in brawl killing

ELGIN, Ill., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Prosecutors have dropped mob action charges against four teen suspects in a weekend melee that ended in the death of a 20-year-old suburban Chicago man.

Four young men, 18 and 19, still face aggravated battery charges pending a homicide investigation in the slaying of Nicolas Swanson, whose funeral was held in Elgin, Ill., Wednesday.

An 18-year-old is charged with unlawful use of a stun gun and a 19-year-old with obstruction of justice. Bond for three of the teens was reduced at a hearing Thursday and they were released on home monitoring. The fourth suspect was released after his parents posted $25,000 bail Wednesday.

A grand jury convenes in two weeks to investigate the incident and its findings could result in possible homicide prosecutions, the Chicago Tribune said.

Kane County officials say Saturday's brawl involved as many as 50 people, most current or former students at two suburban high schools. Swanson's younger brother called him for help on a cell phone before the melee in an unincorporated area.

The victim was fatally stuck in the back of the head by a bottle or baseball bat.
