Sex-crime offender found as security guard

CHICAGO, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A man has been charged with assault after a woman he attacked eight years ago recognized him at his job as a store security guard in Illinois.

Andre Johnson, 36, was changed with misdemeanor assault and failing to register in Illinois as a convicted sex offender after the encounter Monday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday.

Johnson was convicted of sex crimes in Indiana, including for a 1997 rape against the woman who met him again by chance this week. The woman, a representative of a greeting card company, was making a business call on a Target store when she saw Johnson working as a security guard.

Johnson allegedly confronted the woman, demanding to know her name. She refused and he followed her to her car. The woman drove to a police station to report the incident. Johnson, who claimed he thought the woman was a shoplifter although she was wearing vendor identification, was arrested later that day at his home.

Johnson had been sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2000 for the 1997 rape. He also pleaded guilty to sexual battery in a 1996 attack. The Sun-Times said it was unclear why Johnson has been released from prison.
