Cuban asks for more non-partisanship

MIAMI, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A Miami Cuban-American has asked the National Council of La Raza to help national Hispanic organizations become more non-partisan.

Juan Galan, former chairman of the Cuban American National Council, told La Raza President Janet Murguia in Miami her organization and others should lose their Democratic bent, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

"There is a perception of a number of these organizations that sit on the Hispanic Association of Corporate Responsibility board as being Democratic," Galan said. "Think that's hurting the organization."

Murguia and Galan were attending a meeting of the board in Miami.

"To many Cuban Americans, the farm-worker union movement was viewed as aligned with Fidel Castro," Galan said.

Murguia said she appreciated Galan's frankness.

"Miami is a huge community with a very diverse population," she said. "It's fascinating and it's important for me to have an understanding of the people who are here."
