Zoellick vows to work with China

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Deputy Secretary of State nominee Robert Zoellick said Tuesday if conformed he would work with China on many issues, including trade.

"I hope to expand and make regular our dialogue with China on regional and international issues, terrorism, trade and economics, and other topics," Zoellick told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during his confirmation hearing.

If confirmed, he will become the No. 2 U.S. diplomat and will serve directly under Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Zoellick was praised by both Democratic and Republican lawmakers for his work as the U.S. trade representative and for his intellectual prowess.

He served as U.S. trade representative in President Bush's first term and previously worked in key positions in the Commerce and State Departments. He was also a top official at Fannie Mae.
