Cracked terminal to blame in Paris airport accident

PARIS, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- The infrastructure of the roof that collapsed last year at Charles de Gaulle airport killing four people was cracked according to a report released Tuesday.

Jean Berthier, the official responsible for the independent commission that wrote the report for the French Transport Ministry, said the concrete shell supporting the roof had cracked in freezing conditions before the structure collapsed.

According to Berthier, the morning of May 23, when the roof fell, was the coldest of the month.

The terminal has been partially re-opened since the accident to service Air France commercial traffic, although it has not yet been decided if it will be fully rebuilt.

Berthier said the structure could be saved if the price of repair was lower than the cost of reconstruction.

Observers have said a permanent closure would jeopardize the finances and tarnish the image of Aeroports de Paris -- the agency that operates Paris-based airports -- as it moves towards partial privatization
