Britain presses U.S on abuse claims

LONDON, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Britain has asked the United States to investigate allegations of abuse made by one of four Britons released from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, last month.

A Foreign Office spokesman told United Press International British authorities were "very concerned" over Moazzam Begg's claims of mistreatment at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, where he was held before being transferred to Guantanamo.

U.S. authorities had initially investigated the claims and reported no supporting evidence, he said. However, at Britain's request they have agreed to carry out a more detailed inquiry.

The Independent reported Sunday British officials found Begg's allegations "credible." The U.S. military investigations found illegal and abusive interrogation techniques developed in Afghanistan were later used in Guantanamo and Iraq.

Begg said apart from one incident immediately on arrival, he was not mistreated at Guantanamo Bay, as has been widely reported in the British media.

Government officials visited British detainees at Guantanamo nine times and never received complaints of sustained mistreatment.
