Man fires gun in mall, one wounded

KINGSTON, N.Y., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Police had one man in custody Sunday after a gunman opened fire with an "assault-type rifle" in the Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston, N.Y.

State Police Capt. Wayne Olson said the gunman, believed to be acting alone, fired "a significant number" or rounds, hitting one person, the New York Times reported. The victim was being treated at a local hospital for a leg wound. One other person was hospitalized with hand injuries, but was not hut by the gunfire.

The mall was locked down after the shooting. "The mall is closed," Captain Olson said. "It's going to be cleared and it probably will not reopen until sometime tomorrow."

Chief Paul Watzka of the Ulster Police Department said the gunman entered Best Buy and opened fire as he walked through the store. "When he exited Best Buy into the corridor," the police chief said, "that's when he was apprehended by a couple of the employees at the mall." The suspect was captured after apparently running out of ammunition.
