Iran wants Sunnis involved in Iraq

MUNICH, Germany, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Iran wants Iraq's Sunni minority involved in the country's new democratic political process, a senior Tehran envoy said Saturday.

"While inviting the whole Iraqi people and all the groups inside Iraq to safeguard unity and national accord and defend Iraq's territorial integrity, we put emphasis on the need for all-inclusive participation of all groups in the political process," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Gholamali Khoshroo told the 41st Munich Conference on Security Policy.

Iraq has a 60 percent Shiite Muslim majority, the same faith as in neighboring Iran. The insurgency against U.S. forces and the Iraqi government has been mainly waged from the Sunni majority areas of central Iraq.
