MUNICH, Germany, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Germany's defense minister Saturday pledged his country would not allow the Palestinian Authority to collapse.
"Palestine must not become a failed state even before it becomes a sovereign state," Defense Minister Peter Struck told the 41st annual Munich Security Conference.
Struck also reiterated Germany's traditional commitment to protect the existence and security of the State of Israel. "Germany has a historical responsibility with regard to Israel," he said. "The State of Israel has a right to exist."
Germany and other Western European members of the NATO alliance have expressed cautious optimism in the prospects for renewed progress in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process following the Sharm el-Sheik agreement between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
