American nun killed in Amazon

BELEM, Brazil, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- An American nun was shot and killed Saturday in Brazil's Amazon rainforest where she worked as a human rights activist, Brazilian officials said.

Dorothy Stang, who was 76-years-old according to the Brazilian government though other news sources said she was 73, was killed at point-blank range in the northwestern state of Para.

Human Rights Minister Nilmaro Miranda said authorities heard testimony Saturday identifying those responsible for the killing.

Stang had reportedly received death threats in the past during his 10 years working in the Amazon.
