CHICAGO, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- The estate of late Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham is giving a $5.5 million gift to support liberal arts teaching at the University of Chicago.

Graham graduated from the university in 1938 and was a member of the university's board of trustees for more than 30 years.

The bequest earmarks $4 million to support an innovative program to recruit some of the world's most promising young scholars for undergraduate liberal arts teaching -- the largest gift ever to the Society of Fellow in the Liberal Arts.

"The Graham fellows are a vital part of the College's most central commitment," said Dean John Boyer.

Graham led the Post to national prominence in the 1970s winning Pulitzer Prizes for investigative reporting on the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate scandal.

"To love what you do and feel that it matters, how could anything be more fun," Graham said in her autobiography, "Personal History."
