American pilot reports laser

FORT ''''''''WORTH, Texas, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Federal officials Wednesday investigated a report an American Airlines pilot was temporarily blinded by a laser during an approach to a Texas airport.

The pilot was preparing to land at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport about 8:30 p.m. Sunday when the incident occurred, KXAS-TV, Fort Worth, reported.

"It's malicious. There's no question about it," said Gregg Overman, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, which represents American pilots..

Doctors examined the pilot and found no permanent damage to his eyes, but the incident raised concern among pilots.

"We're looking at this as a potential safety hazard, and we will be aggressive about urging prosecution if anyone is caught doing this intentionally," Overman said.

American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said the company was cooperating with the Federal Aviation Administration. The FBI is also involved in the investigation.
