MADISON, Wis., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle has given officials 30 days to make all state government buildings completely smoke-free and wants the Legislature to follow suit.
The governor's executive order does away with designated smoking areas. Three-quarters of Wisconsin cities already prohibit smoking in government-owned buildings, but a number of municipalities still permit smoking in public buildings, the Wisconsin State Journal said.
Doyle urged the Legislature to pass a bill making all government buildings in the state no-smoking zones.
"Both workers and visitors to our state office buildings should be able to breathe clean air and be protected from the dangers of second-hand smoke," Doyle said. "We need to protect the rights of all residents to breathe clean air if they work in or visit government buildings."
Lawmakers banned smoking in and around University of Wisconsin residence halls last year.
