Mayor declares war on Chicago corruption

CHICAGO, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Chicago Mayor Richard M. Delay has declared war on corruption after bribery in a city truck hiring program and abuse of minority set-aside contracting.

In his annual state of the city address, Daley said he is ending the scandal-plagued hired truck program and will no longer accept political contributions from city contractors to his own campaign fund.

Several city workers were indicted by federal prosecutors in the hired-truck scandal.

Former library commissioner Mary Dempsey will review city contracts and former purchasing chief Eric Griggs will clean up a program that reserves city business for companies headed by minority and women entrepreneurs.

Daley said while most city workers work hard and are honest, the few who don't understand that corruption must end will be caught and prosecuted.

Daley proposed stricter enforcement of ethics laws and urged tougher state laws be enacted to punish employees who steal from the taxpayers.
