WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., declined Tuesday to criticize the Republican party's efforts to attack Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid.
The Republican National Committee launched a direct mail attack on the Nevada Democrat earlier this week, accusing Reid of obstructing Senate business, echoing similar party efforts against former Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., last year.
Frist categorized the move as part of the politics that always surrounds the body, but he hopes the two national parties stay out of the chamber's business.
"I want to do business on this cycle in a bipartisan way," Frist told reporters.
The RNC has come under fire from Democrats who say they are attempting to distract from the problems the GOP is having selling Bush's proposal to add private investment accounts to Social Security and attacking Reid before the Senate has even gotten fully into legislative business for the year.
