LONDON, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- British Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell spoke of his "serious concern" about Iran's human rights record Tuesday, after meeting the Iranian ambassador.

The men reportedly discussed a range of bilateral issues during their first meeting since Dr. Seyed Mohammad Hossein Adeli's appointment as ambassador last autumn. Rammell said topics included co-operation on illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

He said in a statement: "Iran's violation of human rights is of serious concern. We are receiving disturbing reports of recent death sentences given to juvenile offenders, increasing harassment and intimidation of journalists, NGOs and human rights defenders and the continued discrimination against Iran's religious minorities."

The signs of minor improvement in human rights following President Mohammad Khatami's election in 1997 have not been sustained, he added.

"This is a matter of profound concern for the British government," said Rammell.

Speaking at the Royal Institute for International Affairs last week, Adeli defended Iran's human rights record, admitting it was flawed, but saying it is improving.
